Situated at the foot of world famous Pikes Peak, Colorado Springs was chosen the number one Best Big City by Money Magazine in their "Best Places to Live" 2006 edition. As a host to several major Army and Air Force bases, Colorado Springs is strongly influenced by the military. The largest of the Colorado Springs military bases is Fort Carson. In 2009, the arrival of the 4th Infantry Division effectively doubled the base's previous population. Due west of Fort Carson is the Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Base, home for the North American Aerospace Defense Command or NORAD. Built during the Cold War, NORAD continues its role of tracking missiles that might be headed toward the United States. Perhaps the best known military installation in Colorado Springs is the United States Air Force Academy, a prestigious university that trains officers for leadership roles in both military and civilian careers. The academys 18,000 mountainous acres attract thousands of visitors annually. Given the level of technology-oriented military bases in the area, it is no surprise that Colorado Springs hosts a significant number of defense and high-tech companies. According to the American Electronics Association, Colorado Springs ranked seventh in the nation in the percentage of its workforce employed in high-technology industries in 2006, drawing companies like Verizon Business and Hewlett-Packard. The defense industry also has a prominent role in the city, which is home to giants such as Lockheed Martin, ITT and Northrop Grumman have local offices. Colorado Springs offers unique tourist attractions. Just minutes west of Colorado Springs are attractions like the Cave of the Winds and the Manitou Cliff Dwellings, both of which offer subterranean tours. Visitors are encouraged to dress appropriately; it might not be jacket weather above ground, but below youll be in a chilly environment. If great golf is on your agenda, head north to Pine Creek Golf Course.
