Once the fifth largest city in North America, today Charleston is a beautiful metropolis with a thriving economy, gracious residents and amazing sightseeing attractions. If you are looking for Charleston hotels, Extended Stay Hotels has several great places to stay, each offering comfortable accommodations and exceptional rates. Named Americas ?best-mannered city? by etiquette expert Marjabelle Young Stewart in 1995, Charleston is a very friendly place to visit. It is also called the Holy City due to its long history of religious tolerance, having welcomed dissenters of numerous faiths. Today Charleston is home to Brith Sholom Beth Israel, the oldest Orthodox synagogue in the South. Many of Charlestons most recognizable tourist attractions stem from its role in American history. One of the most significant historical buildings in Charleston, the Old Exchange and Provost Dungeon, built in the 1770s, returns visitors to the era of colonial South Carolina. Perhaps the most well known historic site in Charleston is Fort Sumter, the island fortress near the opening of Charleston Harbor. After all, it was toward Fort Sumter that the first shot of the Civil War was fired. That shot came from nearby Fort Moultrie, located on the shoreline facing Fort Sumter. Both forts have been returned to their Civil War era condition and are well worth visiting. Should you decide to board the ferry to Fort Sumter at the Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum, be sure you allow time to take in all the other interesting sites here. Patriots Point is home to the USS Yorktown, an aircraft carrier that served valiantly in the Pacific during World War II. Also on display and available for tours are the destroyer USS Laffey, the submarine USS Clamagore as well as other ships, period airplanes and memorabilia.
