Area Attractions |

Carved into the banks of the beautiful River Dart, historic Dartmouth has narrow streets, long flights of steps, overhanging medieval houses and old quays. The streets are full of galleries, restaurants and shops selling crafts, gifts and antiques and the views over the estuary are breathtaking. Remote from urban clamour, Dartmouth has a strong cultural life. Dartmouth music festival is a major Spring event and the summer Shakespeare week has won critical acclaim. The galleries have metropolitan style and the new Flavel Centre is a first class venue for theatre, concert and film. Dartmouth Museum in the 17th century Butterwalk has a collection of paintings and displays reflecting the colourful history of this old port with flair and imagination. Dartmouth has been a yachting centre since Edwardian times and its Royal Regatta is a highlight of the racing season. Dartmouth has many fine old inns and a fantastic choice of restaurants, bistros and cafes, some tucked away in the charming back streets of this historic port. In the Summer, life in Dartmouth turns around its colourful waterfront, where boats of all kinds come and go. The river looks idyllic on a still morning, gradually coming to life as yachts and fishing boats create a changing picture of sheer enjoyment afloat. There is plenty to do and plenty to watch and summer days pass pleasantly beside the Dart. Outside the harbour mouth, beyond the two castles, Start Bay curves gloriously south in a string of tempting coves and beaches.
